Welcome to

Providing outpatient treatment and counseling to individuals and families experiencing substance use disorders in San Francisco, California. 

Our program offers daytime and evening sessions multiple times per week, in-person and also via Zoom.

Dynamic Planning

Amar Healing & Recovery Center program provides support for people suffering from substance use disorder issues and associated co-occurring disorders. From assessments to individualized treatment planning, Amar Healing provides referrals for medical/psychiatric and other services as necessary, including case management, as requested.

The Right Tools

Amar Healing uses a multi-faceted approach including individual therapy, process groups, psycho educational groups, family groups, urinalysis, relapse prevention, trauma/grief and loss counseling, art therapy, self-regulation workshops, discharge planning, aftercare groups, and continued care services.

Walking Together

Our staff includes licensed Marriage and Family Therapists and interns (MFTs and AMFTs), Certified and Registered Alcohol and Drug Counselors and other professionals under the supervision of a Licensed Clinical Director. Many of our staff are in recovery themselves, therefore, they understand the complexities of addiction and serve as models of recovery. Partners, families, and friends can be included in counseling/treatment to ensure that clients have strong support during and after treatment.

Amar provides individual and group therapy including:

  • Weekly Individual Therapy / Counseling

  • Relapse Prevention Groups

  • Trauma / Grief and Loss

  • Couples / Family Therapy

  • Ongoing Family Groups

  • Yoga and Meditation Groups - Astrud Castillo

  • Qi-Gong taught by Dr. Randy Sugawara

  • Spiritual Formation Groups (examining, defining, creating your own practice)

  • Process Groups

  • Community Activities - including group hikes, game nights, and others

  • Continued Alumni Group

  • Case Management as needed

We also familiarize our clients with the main self-help groups available in the community such as: AA, NA, LifeRing, Rational Recovery, Al-Anon, CODA, ACA, etc.

Herberth S. Rivera, LMFT, SAP

Program and Admissions Director

Mr. Herberth Rivera is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and supervises therapist associates and other counselors working towards their licensure. He has worked as a behavioral consultant helping to reunify families and their children separated in family law procedures and as a therapist in the field of treatment for alcoholism/addiction.

He served as Program Director for the Henry Ohlhoff House, a residential treatment program in San Francisco. In 2009, Herberth helped launch and directed Marin Outpatient and Recovery Services in Marin County. In 2010, he joined The Sequoia Center medical-based treatment program in Redwood City as a Family Case Manager and Family Therapist providing both inpatient and outpatient services.

Herberth has lectured at several graduate counseling psychology programs including the Wright Institute in Berkeley, Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, Sofia University in Palo Alto, and other institutions.
